‘Ice Age 3’ Freezes ‘Transformers’…Almost-Box Office Results: July 3-5

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs wins! No, wait, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen remains dominant! No, that's not right either. So who won top spot this weekend? Both. Ice Age 3 and Transformers 2 both grossed an estimated $42.5 million. The two were close Friday and Saturday; nobody could determine who made the most. So now it's official: Transformers wins.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs may have been almost #1; however it still couldn't beat the previous Ice Age movies. That might be because Ice Age and Ice Age: The Meltdown both opened in March, while Dawn of the Dinosaurs tried its luck as a major summer blockbuster. The original Ice Age grossed $46.3 million opening weekend, debuting in first place; The Meltdown raked in $68 million. The bad reviews from critics might've halted a few bucks, but not $20 million. Dawn of the Dinosaurs'
total, since it opened Wednesday July 1st to get a head start on the holiday weekend, is $67.5 million domestic.

Transformers; Revenge of the Fallen was top dog one again, grossing $42.3 million. Last weekend, Fallen shocked the nation with a record-breaking $109 million opening. Its worldwide total is now $591.5 million. The Michael Bay-directed sequel is on track to beat the original Transformers.

In third place, despite good reviews and Johnny Depp with the title role, Public Enemies still couldn't manage to keep that much of an audience, grossing $25.3 million in the past two days, $41 million since opening July 1st. Fourth was The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, with $12.9 million. The romantic comedy's worldwide total is now $100.2 million. And my Hangover watch continues, this weekend in fifth with an estimated $11.3 million. Todd Phillip's Vegas comedy's worldwide total is now $265.7 million. At this rate, The Hangover will easily top similar Wedding Crashers' $285.2 million. Hangover remains Phillips most successful movie (Road Trip: $119.8 million total; Old School: $87 million).

Other movies that opened this weekend:

Nia Vardalos makes her debut as a screenwriter and director in I Hate Valentine's Day. She and John Corbett reunite for the first time since My Big Fat Greek Wedding in the IFC released film. It grossed an estimated $628,333.
